From overwhelm to wellbeing – building organisational capacity to lead sector reform. Australian Government – Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.
The 2018 Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety made a series of recommendations about how best to deliver high quality aged care services to support the health and wellbeing of elderly Australians.
The roll out and enforcement of these recommendations fell to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission – a national organisation with 200 employees spread across seven sites.
Help us transform our culture so that we are ready and able to implement major sector reforms. Build skills and resilience within our leadership team enable us to support staff through a period of significant change.
Synergy IQ undertook two major pieces of work with the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission:
1. A culture transformation program. 2. Leadership resilience and wellbeing program.
Phase 1We began our journey with the Commission by imagining a future state, where values align with behaviours that support great outcomes for staff and for clients.
We mapped this future state against the current state and developed a plan to move the organisation forward, including and a set of behavioural expectations.
Working closely with the leadership team, we coached individuals that needed extra support to build the skills and mindset required to lead the organisation through this period of transformation.
A suite of online and offline ‘Living Values’ resources were developed, and we used variety of face-to-face and digital mechanisms to ensure that we engaged every team member in the culture transformation program.
From the outset, we partnered closely with internal change resources to ensure that momentum would be maintained and that changes would become business as usual.
Phase 2As sector reform was rolled out, the Commission began to observe signs of burnout.
SynergyIQ was brought back to help the organisation identify the areas in need of critical attention and develop a program to help build resilience and promote wellbeing.
We facilitated honest and open discussions about the challenges being faced – ensuring that people felt heard. We revisited the values and behaviours and introduced new concepts including healthy and unhealthy protection methods (e.g. perfection versus healthy striving) and integrity (choices and decisions).
We introduced the Healthy Mind Platter and provided a range of action-oriented tools and resources for leaders to take back to their teams to engage them in conversations about wellbeing and resilience.
After overwhelmingly positive feedback from the first round of workshops, SynergyIQ was called back again in 2021 to repeat these wellbeing sessions with the Commission’s leadership group.
