Martin Westwell is the Chief Executive of the Department for Education, appointed in April 2022 after four successful years leading the SACE Board. With a distinguished career in education, Martin has dedicated his work to using evidence-based approaches to inform policy, practice, and innovation. His impact spans globally, including work with UNESCO on strategic education planning in the Asia-Pacific region and as a Chief Investigator at the ARC Science of Learning Research Centre.
Martin’s contributions to education have been widely recognized, earning him the prestigious ACEL Gold Medal in 2018 for his outstanding leadership in educational administration. Originally from the UK, Martin holds a PhD from Cambridge University and has held academic positions at both Oxford University and Flinders University, where he served as the inaugural Director of the Flinders Centre for Science Education in the 21st Century.
